SAROJINI NAIDU'S COROMANDEL FISHERS
INTRODUCTION:
Sarojini
Naidu was born in Bengali Hindu family
at Hyderabad. She was educated in Cambridge, London. She was an Indian
Independence activist and a poetess. She was the follower of Mahatma Gandhi.
Her poems were written for children and her poems praised the nature, nation.
Her poems are filled with patriotism. She also wrote poems on Love and Death.
She became the president of Indian National Congress. She was the first woman
to be appointed as Governor of Uttar Pradesh. She is known as the Nightingale
of India.
COROMANDEL FISHERS:
Coromandel
fishers is a poem that focuses on the fishermen. Sarojini Naidu motivates the
people through this poem. Though the poem is written for the fishermen, it
metaphorically focuses on the Indian people. The poetess urges the people to
hasten their freedom struggle. Her lines such as “Come, let us gather our
nets from the shore and set our catamarans free” , “ No longer delay, let us
hasten away in the track of the sea gull’s call” are motivational.
RISE BROTHERS RISE:
The
poet asks the fishermen to rise in the morning light. The sky prays to the
morning light. The poet portrays that the wind sleeps in the arms of the dawn.
She compares the wind to a child. Like a child the wind cried all the night and
sleeps during the morning. The speaker calls the fishermen to gather their nets
from the shore. They have to set their
catamarans free. The fishermen have to capture the wealth of the sea. They are
the kings of the sea.
POETESS’S ADVICE:
The
poetess advices not to delay their voyage. She asks the fishermen to track the
seagull’s call. She says that the sea is their mother, the cloud is their
brother, the waves are their comrades. The fishermen toss at the fall of the
sun. The poetess quest ions about the return of the fishermen. The hand of the
Sea-god drives at the Sunset. The person who holds the storm by the hair will
hide the fishermen’s lives in his breast.
DESCRIPTION OF THE NATURE:
The
poetess wonders on the sweetness of the conclave glade and the sweet scent of
the mango grove. The sands appears sweet
at the full of the moon. The sounds of the voices they love make them happy. The poetess tells them about
the kiss of the spray and the wild foam’s glee. She asks them to row their boat
to the verge where the low sky joins the sea. She wants the fishermen to
explore till the sea’s end.

fishermen’s life. The poetess motivates the people to work free. Through this
poem, she has intiated the feel to protest for
the freedom struggle. She concludes the poem with these lines “Row,
brothers, row to the edge of the verge,
where the low sky mates with the sea”.
