RAJAGOPALACHARI'S EDUCATION FOR NEW INDIA

ABOUT THE AUTHOR:
           Rajagopalachari was a lawyer, politician, statesman, scholar, speaker and writer. He was the Governor of Bengal for sometime and became the Governor General of India. Education  for India is a part of a convocation  address that was delivered at Madras University in 1948. He reminds the young graduate that freedom means the creation of New values. He impels them to embrace the qualities of Leadership mould them into moral and cultural army of India.
 
FREEDOM:
         Freedom has given the people of India a new status and new opportunities. Rajagopalachari advises to discard selfishness, laziness and narrowness of outlook. Freedom of the nation suggests toil and creation of New Values and old ones. The young graduates should be able to discharge new responsibilities. He tells us to put the action with full responsibilities. He tells us to put the action with full capacity. Everyone must work in his own sphere with humbleness. It should help in productive effort.
            “Work is wealth and Service is happiness”

HONEST WORK:
        Rajagopalachari speaks out the honest works. He says that Honest work is the habit of respecting other people’s feelings. He also notes that the citizen should have the mode of life evolved by different religious faiths, occupations and attainments. He confronts that there is no communal hatred in India. The communal ill feeling arises with Greed and Fear of defeat. In economic competition. The rise of selfishness and personal ambition produce mistaken mind with communal ill- will

LEADERSHIP:
         According to Rajagopalachari, An independent state need trained leadership. The purpose of University education is to train leadership. The students should remember the obligation of leadership. The students are the moral and cultural  army of India. The progressive development in culture of the nation is in the concern of Students.
             “The Youth of Today are the citizen of Tomorrow”

NOTE TO THE EDUCATIONALIST:
          Rajagopalachari suggests that less stress should be laid on examination. The more stress should be on Opportunities for study and assimilation. The exams are the more bitter form of compulsion.  The examinations leave a distaste in the minds of successful candidates. The aptitude and the love of knowledge should be the outcome of education. Students should have the choice of studies. Rajagopalachari quotes the two problems which worries the educationalist
1.      The problem of religious and moral instruction in a land of many faiths
2.      The problem arising out of a large variety of Languages
The task of teaching the students hoe to read and write and to count and calculate is important. The Education should mould the personality of the student.

ADVICE TO THE STUDENTS:
1.      Consideration for the feelings of others
2.      Be patient and kind
3.      Do not give way to jealousy or the desire to boast
4.      Do not always insist on having your own way.
5.      Be not rude.
6.      Do not allow yourself to be irritated or be resentful.
7.      Do not rejoice at wrong.
8.      Rejoice in the right.
9.      Try to bear misfortunes bravely.

CONCLUSION:
           Thus, Rajagopalachari concludes with the words “show trust in others and have faith that love will prevail this is what Paul said. He reminds young graduates that freedom also means the creation of new values for old ones. Among the questions related to Eduacation, he dwells upon the instruction based on moral and religious views in schools. He also insists the use of mother tongue as the medium of instruction.
